b. 1978 Canada
Fred Muram was born in Ottawa, Ontario and grew up in a variety of locales in the United States and Canada. Ultimately, these moves were serendipitous, allowing him the freedom to switch paths to photography, where his curiosity could fully express itself without the tedious hindrance of rules or danger. His facility and in-depth experience with new media technology gave him tools to develop expansive modes of expression, ranging from black and white Polaroid images and digital imaging, to animation and film. Fred became intrigued with the humbling episodes in which people were required to expose themselves in moments that seemed singular and awkward, but were in fact, mundane and shared. These ideas generated a body of work that revealed unexpected human connections and empathy through the development and documentation of curious and peculiar scenarios. His current work expands on these notions in the creation of situations involving oddity, daydreams, and absurdity. Fred holds a BFA in photography from Indiana University and an MFA in photography from the University of Washington.
